Like the ninja and samurai, the yakuza have become one of the hallmarks of Japanese culture and society in the eyes of the rest of the world. Widely featured in literature and film, this phenomenon is both captivating and at the same time begs the question: how can such an archaic and quasi-feudal structure persist in democratic, industrialized, and technologically advanced Japan? Pelletier's comparisons with criminal organizations in other countries, particularly the Sicilian Mafia, reveal common features but also highlight the specifics of the Japanese criminal underworld: its closeness to the far right in both ideology and functioning. Western researchers have long described in detail the activities of the yakuza, their hierarchy, rituals, and cultural codes (tattoos, clothing, etc.). However, the yakuza's connection to the political world has not yet been thoroughly studied. Pelletier takes up this "uncomfortable" topic in his book, talking about both the history and the present day of organized crime in Japan.
