Doctor of Historical Sciences Andrey Mitrofanov's monograph, "Emperor Alexius I Comnenus and His Strategy," examines the military and political situation surrounding the Byzantine Empire on the eve of Alexius Comnenus's seizure of power in 1081, exploring the emperor's major military campaigns and the tactics and armaments of his army. The author draws conclusions regarding the nature of Alexius Comnenus's military and political strategy from a well-known work of Byzantine historical literature, the Alexiad by Anna Comnena, as well as the Annals of John Zonaras, the Strategikon by Katakalon Kekaumenos, and Latin and Seljuk historical works.
The work presents new evidence for the Mongol origins of the Great Seljuk dynasty and new arguments in favor of a radical change in the tactics of the Varangian Guard during the reign of Alexius Comnenus. It also examines the Westernization of the Byzantine army on the eve of the First Crusade. The study concludes that the Polovtsian factor played a crucial role in the development of Byzantine-Russian relations in the early 12th century. Specifically, the Polovtsian expansion into the Danubian lands is linked to the political consolidation of the Toksobichi tribal union, which was based on Mongol clans. This allows us to view the Polovtsian advance into the Balkans at the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries as a kind of prologue to the Mongol conquests of the 13th century.
