Emperor Alexander III

Emperor Alexander III earned the title of Tsar-Peacemaker even during his lifetime, as not a drop of Russian blood was spilled on the battlefield during his reign. Under him, Russia regained its prestige as a great world power, whose importance and influence became clear and universally recognized. Alexander III neither admired the West nor worshipped liberal ideas, believing that the literal imposition of foreign customs would not be beneficial to Russia. He was a Russian man, Russian not by his "blood composition," but by his thoughts, ideas, and feelings. He was an Orthodox Tsar-Patriot, for whom all things Russian were always dear and priceless, for they were the legacy of his ancestors, a gift from the Almighty. He never doubted for a moment that the difficulties and inconsistencies in Russian life should be overcome by relying on his own sense of duty and responsibility, and on his own interests.
