A brilliant intellectual, admirer and remarkable connoisseur of Hellenic culture, initiated into the Eleusinian mysteries, he was also a proven military leader who went through both of Trajan's Dacian campaigns. It was Publius Aelius Hadrian who became the successor of this emperor, recognized by the Senate of the Roman people as "the best princeps". During his twenty-one years of reign, Hadrian managed to leave an outstanding legacy in the Roman Empire. Having abandoned the aggressive policy of his predecessor, this emperor strengthened the borders of the state and ensured stability and prosperity in the provinces. The only exception was one of them, where the Third Jewish War broke out. Hadrian contributed in every way to the cultural rise of the Empire. Rome, his beloved Athens and many other cities were decorated with remarkable buildings. Hadrian is also known for his patronage of writers and philosophers. At the same time, he sometimes showed considerable cruelty, the victims of which were prominent military leaders and senators. It is worth noting another feature of the personality of the outstanding ruler: while admiring Hellenic culture, in matters of state Hadrian remained a Roman to the marrow of his bones. This is what ensured the Empire's power and prosperity.
