At the beginning of the 21st century, civil wars are increasingly becoming the subject of political debate and scholarly analysis. What cultural mechanisms transform isolated conflicts into major civil wars? In search of an answer to this question, a team of authors attempts to trace how the term "civil war" was used in Russia in 1917–1918.

By combining approaches from various schools of intellectual, cultural, and political history, the researchers analyze the meanings attached to this term, how it was manipulated by various political forces, the contexts that determined its use, and how these statements were received by those addressed. One of the book's main goals is to understand how the pre-emptive pronouncement of violence against "internal enemies" contributes to the actual escalation of conflicts.
