The book by the Russian writer, journalist, publisher of the newspaper "Sankt-Peterburgskie Vedomosti" Vasily Avseenko (1842-1913) was published in 1903 for the anniversary of Saint Petersburg. "Illustrated History of Saint Petersburg" will take us through two centuries in the life of the city on the Neva, from the laying of the first stone to the beginning of the 20th century. But the work of Vasily Avseenko is not only a historical excursion: it excellently describes the life and customs of the city's residents, holidays, architectural monuments and sights of the Northern Palmyra. In addition, it found room for bright masterful portraits of outstanding people whose activities were associated with the city on the Neva - from emperors and great military leaders to artists, writers and poets. "Illustrated History of Saint Petersburg" has long been a bibliographic rarity. The new edition is supplemented with Russian and foreign paintings, as well as unique engravings and archival documents.
