Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov (1814–1841) was a Russian poet, novelist, playwright, and artist. His work, with its depth and musicality, marked a new flowering in 19th-century poetry and prose. "Reading every line from Lermontov's pen is like listening to musical chords, while simultaneously following the shaken strings, plucked by an invisible hand...," wrote V.G. Belinsky. Lermontov's works influenced both his contemporaries and poets and writers of subsequent generations—as A.A. Blok noted, they "became part of the flesh and blood of Russian literature."
This collection includes selected works by the author—poems from various years, the narrative poems "Izmail-Bey," "Mtsyri," "The Song of... the Merchant Kalashnikov," "The Demon," the drama "Masquerade," and the novel "A Hero of Our Time."

The publication is accompanied by illustrations by 19th- and early 20th-century artists V.A. Polyakov, M. Zichy, V.M. Vasnetsov, and others, including some rather rare ones. The book also includes fragments of paintings and drawings by Lermontov himself.
