In the early 1960s, young Soviet scientists, staunch scientific romantics, believed they could conquer nature and transform the world—exploring space, harnessing the atom, and taming thunderstorms. Oleg Tulin and Sergei Krylov, who were conducting field research on atmospheric electricity, had no doubt that the latter was possible. But to obtain the necessary data, they would have to do the unthinkable—risk their own lives by flying a plane into the very center of a thunderstorm.
Dedicated to the everyday lives of Soviet physicists, the novel was published in 1961 and immediately achieved cult status. It has been adapted into several films and reprinted numerous times.
