Boris Mozhaev's honest prose, imbued with a love for the Russian village and the people whose hard work helped the country rise from the ruins of wars and revolutions, has always found a grateful response in the hearts of his compatriots. Coming from a peasant family, the writer keenly felt and understood both the pain and joy of village life. Courage, moral fortitude, responsibility to the land, and a desire for justice—Boris Mozhaev highly valued these traits of the Russian peasantry and was able to discern them beneath naivety or simplicity, wit or blunt directness.

The stories and short stories presented in this book were written over a variety of years, many of which have been adapted for film, the most famous of which is the film "Master of the Taiga" about the young police officer Vasily Serezhkin (starring Vladimir Vysotsky and Valery Zolotukhin). The stories "Alive" and "One and a Half Square Meters," which inspired celebrated productions at the Taganka Theater, and "The History of the Village of Brekhovo..." became iconic works of the Soviet era. Written in different years, these stories offer a panoramic view of life in a vast country, unfolding over time, through the lives of ordinary people inextricably linked to it.
