The inter-clan struggle in Japan in the second half of the 12th century led to armed conflicts three times - in 1156, 1159-1160 and in 1185. This was the time of the rise to absolute power, undivided domination, and then crushing defeat and death of the feudal house of Taira under the blows of the rival house of Minamoto. Each of these conflicts formed the basis of a series of oral legends called "gunki" (literally "warrior tales"). The very first of them, "Hogen monogatari", tells of the turmoil of 1156, when after the death of the ex-emperor Toba, three large feudal houses (Fujiwara, Taira and Minamoto) clashed with each other in a struggle for supreme power. The fourth side in the struggle were large Buddhist monasteries with formidable warrior monks. It was a life-or-death battle between the two sides, in which son fought against father, brother against brother, breaking all human and heavenly laws. Ballads were composed about those cruel times, which were chanted by wandering storytellers biwa-hoshi to the accompaniment of the Japanese lute biwa - the medieval Japanese believed that stories about fallen heroes would bring peace to their rebellious souls...
