"The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha" was first published in 1605. Cervantes originally conceived the work as a parody of chivalric, or courtly, romances. Their plots were roughly similar: a highly moral knight embarks on a perilous journey, accomplishing incredible feats and composing lyrical verses in the name of his beautiful lady. Cervantes's hero attempts the same: Don Quixote finds himself a glorious suit of armor, a faithful squire, and a beautiful lady, and embarks on a quest to prove his valor. However, the courageous and selfless Knight of the Sorrowful Countenance continually encounters a reality strikingly different from the images depicted in courtly romances...

Among Cervantes's contemporaries, his novel was a resounding success; Don Quixote was translated into many languages, and Cervantes soon became famous throughout Europe. The story of the hapless knight-errant continues to be reprinted in numerous editions today. This edition features the novel's text with illustrations by José Jiménez Aranda (1837–1903) and other Spanish artists active at the turn of the 20th century.
