Cities are a key reference point for contemporary historical consciousness: their emergence, development and decline are used to determine the vector of human civilization. This book focuses on the historicity of cities - the dynamic intersection of different temporal projections that shape images of the city and urban memory, which are produced by a multitude of competing practices, communities and institutions. The contributors to the book are predominantly specialists in intellectual and cultural history; they make it possible to trace over a long period of time (from the late Middle Ages to the present, from medieval chronicles and engravings to graffiti and street art) how and by whom images of the city are created and changed. By addressing urban history and modernity, analyzing the diversity of boundaries and connections between the present and the past, the collection seeks to stimulate dialogue between urban studies, intellectual history, sociology of culture, public history, and other fields that study the transformation of the fabric of urban life in its temporal perspective.
