The Khazars are one of the most enigmatic peoples of the early Middle Ages. It is not even known where the Khazars came from in the Volga-Don steppes or where they went after the collapse of their state. Some believe that the multinational Khazar Khaganate was almost entirely devoid of ethnic Khazars during the last century and a half of its short history. The few who did live there may have practiced Judaism, although they were not Jews, but likely Turks.
The authors of this book, Oleg Ivik and Vladimir Klyuchnikov, participated in the excavations of Khazar burial mounds and fortresses for many years. Using medieval sources, modern historical works, and their own archaeological experience, they attempt to acquaint readers with the history of the Khazars and the Khazar Khaganate.
