Everyday life on the Solovetsky Archipelago, or simply the Island, as Solovki is known to its inhabitants, miraculously encompasses a wide range of eras in Russian history.

Therefore, the book offered to the reader's attention so naturally combines stories about the lives of a wide variety of people: our contemporaries and ascetics of piety of the 15th and 16th centuries, the Streltsy of Governor Meshcherinov, who dealt with the participants of the infamous Solovetsky Siege of the second half of the 17th century, cabin boys from the Great Patriotic War, prisoners of the Solovetsky Special Purpose Camp, and the Chekists from Maxim Gorky's entourage, who visited Solovki in 1929.

On this island in the White Sea, time seems to stand still, and once here, we can fully experience this, becoming convinced that everyday life on Solovki is not at all a tedious routine, but something greater—something one wouldn't think about on the mainland. Here, everyone becomes part of history and part of the space the ancient Sami called saivo, which translates as "Island of the Dead."
