The play was born out of Ostrovsky's literary expedition along the Volga - inspired by the journey and his passionate love for the actress Lyubov Kositskaya, he created an unforgettable image of Katerina Kabanova. Katerina grew up in love and affection, but after marriage she finds herself in a family where Domostroy principles and a cruel mother-in-law await her. Having fallen in love with another man, she faces a choice: to submit or risk everything, even her own soul.

Almost 20 years later, Ostrovsky again turned to the theme of women's fate - in 1878, "The Dowry" appeared. The story of Larisa Ogudalova, a girl without a dowry, whose beauty and talent attract many men, but the lack of wealth makes her powerless, became one of the most poignant tragedies of the Russian stage.

Two works by the great playwright - about the nobility and purity of the soul, not broken under social oppression.
