Alexander Nikolayevich Ostrovsky is one of the most popular Russian playwrights, whose work had a huge impact on the development of the Russian theater: the stage was filled with ordinary people (merchants, officials, young hustlers, maidens at marriage), living with concerns, aspirations and passions that are close and understandable to the audience at all times. The playwright created almost fifty plays, revealing the Russian national character in its entirety. The edition includes such famous plays as "We'll settle for our own people!", "Poverty is not a vice", "Thunderstorm", "Bespridannitsa", "The Snow Maiden", which still do not leave the stage. Ostrovsky's works attract not only theater and film directors, but also artists-illustrators, striving to embody Ostrovsky's stories on the pages of books, to convey the characteristic features of his characters. Many famous artists, including P. M. Boklevsky, B. M. Kustodiev, V. M. Vasnetsov, addressed this difficult task. Illustrations by these and other artists of the XIX - early XX century are included in the book.
