The work of the major German historian K. J. Belokh (1854-1929) "Greek History" remains the most complete of the existing in Russian language general histories of Greece of the Archaic and Classical eras (VIII-IV centuries BC). In most general courses of ancient Greek history it is most often reduced to the history of Athens and Sparta. In this work, however, the history of Ancient Greece as a whole is given. It is almost the only general course of Greek history in Russian, from which one can learn about the development of events in Miletus, Byzantium, Megara, Corinth, Sikyon, Syracuse, Akraganta, Boeotia, Thessaly, Phocis, Argolida, Kerkyra, Euboea, Samos, Lesbos and other polis, regions and islands of Greece. From this work it is possible to draw quite detailed information about the activities not only of Solon, Pisistratus, Clysfen, Pericles, Leonidas, Pausanias, but also of Thrasybulus, Polycrates, Kypselus, Theagenes, Gelon, Gieron, both Dionysius, Dion, Timoleon and many other outstanding historical persons. K. Y. Belokh was one of the first to investigate not only the political but also the socio-economic history of Greece, which, however, not only did not hinder, but, on the contrary, helped him to give excellent sketches of the development of Greek spiritual culture (philosophy, science, art, religion).
