First published in 1846, the novel by Alexandre Dumas père (1802–1870) “The Countess de Monsoreau” was the second part of his trilogy dedicated to the Huguenot wars. The main character of the novel is the beautiful Diane de Meridor, later de Monsoreau. Her affair with the handsome Count de Bussy unfolds against the backdrop of court and political intrigue during the reign of Henry III in France. Thanks to Dumas’s mastery, the novel is a joy to read. The text is translated by Valery Sergeevich Stolbov (part one) and his wife Nina Yakovlevna Butyrina (part two). The book is decorated with illustrations by the French painter, theater and film artist Maurice Leloir (1853–1940). The novel “The Countess de Monsoreau” by Alexandre Dumas is the second part of his trilogy dedicated to the Huguenot wars. The first novel in the series is Queen Margot, and the third is Forty-Five. The trilogy takes place in the second half of the 16th century against the backdrop of almost constant clashes between French Protestants and Catholics. This confrontation regularly shook France under the last kings of the Valois dynasty. Dumas made Marguerite de Valois the heroine of the first novel in the trilogy. She was the daughter of Catherine de Medici, who effectively ruled France for her son, the fifteen-year-old King Francis II. The main character of the second novel in the series is also a woman, the beautiful Diane de Meridor, later Countess de Monsoreau. Her affair with the brilliant Count de Bussy unfolds amid court and political intrigue during the reign of Henry III in France.
