This book, for the first time in Russian scholarship, attempts to analyze information from Russian and Western travelers about the statehood and law of the countries, regions, and peoples of Central Asia in the 18th to early 20th centuries. Diplomats, scholars, intelligence officers, traders, and sometimes tourists and even prisoners of war had the opportunity to observe the functioning of government bodies and the regulation of legal relations in the Central Asian states, often becoming participants in these relations themselves. The study analyzed the notes and accounts of more than 200 travelers, compiled following their stay in Central Asia. Systematization of their information allowed for the formation of a fairly detailed picture of the state structure and legal relations in the Central Asian states and dominions. This book is intended for specialists in the history of state and law, comparative law, legal anthropology, historians, orientalists, source scholars, political scientists, and ethnographers. It can also serve as supplementary material for students studying these fields.
