The two books by M. Rothbard, "The State and Money" and "Testimony Against the Federal Reserve," published in the present edition, are the best introductions to the problems of money circulation. In the first essay the author shows that money arises from voluntary exchanges in the marketplace, no social contracts or government edicts create money, and that the free market should be extended to the production and circulation of money. Beginning with a consideration of the classical gold standard of the nineteenth century, the author concludes his study by analyzing the probable emergence of a European monetary unit and the possible world of fiat money. In the afterword, G. Hülsmann continues the analysis from the point where Rothbard finished and brings it to 2001, before the emergence of the euro. In his opinion, sooner or later the unified European system being built today will collapse. The second essay begins with a brief look at the theory of money and banking and then covers the key points of the overt and behind-the-scenes history of the creation of the Federal Reserve System. The author describes the struggle between competing elites and their coming together to achieve the common goal of creating the Fed, the central bank of the United States.
