"Madame Bovary" is the most famous novel by Gustave Flaubert, which stirred up the public and brought him scandalous fame. It was first published in a Parisian literary magazine in 1856, and the next year the author was brought to trial for insulting morality. Emma Bovary lives in a loveless marriage and dreams of another life - exciting, beautiful, full of passions, like in the novels she read in her youth. She seems to know what she wants, but her desires are not about herself, but about an imaginary world. In this search, she moves further and further away from reality and herself. Flaubert shows how easy it is to get entangled in other people's images of happiness and lose support if desires are born not from within, but under the influence of other people's words, examples and expectations.
