The release of the novel "Gentlemen of the Golovlevs", which in the late 1870s wrote the classic of Russian literature, Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin, was a new stage in the development of the genre. The author and foreshadowed the end of the old novel, in which the plot was based on love peripetias or everyday situations. In his opinion, did not meet the requirements of the time and the classic psychological novel - the genre in which Ivan Turgenev and Ivan Goncharov worked. "The reader is no longer the same. He demands that he be given a zemstvo activist, nihilist, justice of the peace, and perhaps even the governor. And where to find them? How to find them? What sauce to serve them with?" - asked the author.
With the work "Gentlemen Golovlevs" the writer gave an answer to his own question. At the center of the narrative is the tragic story of a dying family of landowners in Russia, which survived the reform of 1861. Each of its members suffers its own collapse. Arina Petrovna has provided for herself and her children all her life, and now she does not know who to give her inheritance to. Stepan finds neither measure nor cause in life. Deprived of morals Porfiry gets the nickname Judas. Pavel does neither good nor evil deeds ... "Mr. Golovlevy" repeatedly staged in the theater and cinema. The premiere of the first dramatization of Nikolai Kulikov took place in Moscow in 1880 - almost immediately after the release of the novel. Popular became and TV play in 1979, in which the famous Soviet actors Elena Gogoleva and Vladimir Kenigson played.
