Poet Emily Dickinson - one of the most significant figures in American poetry of the XIX century, "a ray of light in the Puritan kingdom" of New England [region in the United States, uniting the states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont. - Prosodia]. Dickinson was born in 1830 and died 55 years later in the same house, hardly ever left her hometown of Amherst, never married or had children, wrote more than a thousand poems, of which she published less than a dozen in her lifetime. Canadian writer Dominique Fortier "wove" the real facts of Emily Dickinson's life with her own fantasies. As stated in the publisher's abstract, the result is "a deep and subtle narrative about the freedom of imagination and the nature of creativity, about the places in which we live and that live inside us." For "Cities on Paper. The Life of Emily Dickinson," Fortier was awarded the prestigious Renodo Prize (2020). The book was translated from French by Alla Smirnova. Dominique Fortier was born in Quebec in 1972, received her PhD in French literature from McGill University, worked in various publishing houses, and is the author of five novels. She is the recipient of the French Gens de mer (Sailors' Prize) and the Governor General's Award, as well as Canada's highest literary prize.
