Mario Vargas Llosa is a Peruvian writer, one of the outstanding representatives of Latin American prose, winner of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Cervantes Prize and other prestigious awards, member of the French Academy, and Chevalier of the Legion of Honor.

"The City and the Dogs", the first and largely autobiographical novel by Mario Vargas Llosa, is one of the twenty best Spanish-language novels of the 20th century, and it is believed that the "boom" of Latin American prose began with it. However, in the writer's homeland, the fate of the novel was not easy. In 1962, it was awarded the prestigious Spanish Brevet Library Prize, and in the same year, the leadership of the military school described in the book branded the novel as slanderous and staged a demonstrative ceremony of burning 1,000 copies in the school yard.

The novel's heroes are sixteen-year-old cadets at the prestigious Leoncio Prado Military School. Parents send their wayward children there in the hope that the strict barracks discipline will knock the foolishness out of them and help them grow up to be decent people...
