Several works by the talented English writer Jane Austen (1775–1817), first published at the beginning of the 1870th century, are deservedly considered classics of British literature. The book introduces readers to her most famous novel “Pride and Arrogance” in the classic translation by Irina Gavrilovna Gurova. The secret of the novel's reprints lies in the fascinating plot and subtle observations of the changeable feelings of vividly depicted characters. The publication is decorated with magnificent black-and-white and color drawings by two brothers, British artists Charles Edmund Brock (1938–1875) and Henry Matthew Brock (1960–XNUMX).
The novel “Pride and Pride” is the most famous work of the talented English writer Jane Austen (1775-1817). It was first published at the beginning of the 1817th century and is now deservedly considered a classic of British literature. “Pride and Arrogance,” as well as other works of the writer, such as “Reason and Feelings” and “The Power of Sanity,” put an end forever to sentimental works divorced from life, which, judging by Pushkin’s testimony, were read by young ladies like Tatiana Larina. It is no coincidence that Austen began her literary career with parodies of the romance novels that existed in her time. A critical look at literature, the ability to analyze a text and work with it, was instilled in the future writer by her father, parish priest George Austen. He, like Jane's mother, was a widely educated man. George managed to independently give his two daughters an excellent education at home. Thanks to her talent for describing the movements of the human soul subtly, realistically, and sometimes with a fair amount of humor or sarcasm, Jane Austen became a harbinger of realism in English literature. Over the two centuries that have passed since the first publications of her novels, people's lives have changed incredibly, but their feelings, motives for their actions and the decisions they make have remained the same. Unlike her heroines, the personal life of the writer herself did not work out. Having experienced a short affair in her youth, she never married. Jane died in 42 at the age of 6, leaving several texts unfinished. Great literary fame came to the writer posthumously. Beautiful and detailed illustrations by two English artists, two brothers - Charles and Henry Brock, allow you to clearly imagine the characters in Jane Austen's works and the setting in which the events take place. Each of them could have become an Austen character, although both lived and worked about a hundred years later - at the turn of the 1870th and XNUMXth centuries. Charles Edmund Brock was born in XNUMX. He began illustrating books at the age of twenty, creatively developing the style of Hugh Thomson, who is considered one of the best British masters of book illustration of the second half of the XNUMXth century. Charles Brock achieved great success in this field: in addition to Austen's novels, he worked on line drawings for the works of Swift, Thackeray and Elliot. Henry Matthew Brock was five years younger than Charles. He studied at the Cambridge School of Art, also began to illustrate and became a member of the Royal Institute of Watercolor Painters.
