In our Renaissance series we have already covered such famous Italian dynasties as the Medici and D'Este, and now it is time for a book about another brilliant family of medieval and Renaissance Europe - the Gonzagas. Representatives of the House of Gonzaga for almost four centuries took part in the most important events in the history of Italy and Europe. Its representatives were in power in Mantua for almost 380 years, from 1328 to 1707. First as captains of the people, then, from 1433, as marquises, from 1530 as dukes, that is, on the whole longer than the Medici in Florence, and the Visconti and Sforza, even combined, in Milan.
Under Gonzaga, Mantua became one of the cultural capitals of the Renaissance - names such as Dante, Petrarch, Pisanello, Mantegna, Filarete and even the legendary myth of the Holy Grail are associated with Gonzaga. The life of the Gonzaga family is one of creation and destruction, wars and conspiracies, struggles for power and influence. The book by Luca Sarzi Amade, a famous Italian journalist and popularizer of science, reads like a fascinating historical novel, although in fact it is a real non-fiction, in which real events of the past in the masterful presentation of the author are transformed into an absolutely living history.
