Born in Petrozavodsk, Russian writer Dmitry Novikov served in the Northern Fleet and writes of his native land with such love that his prose teems with poetry. His novel "Naked Flame" (shortlisted for the Russian Booker Prize (2019), winner of the Fyodor Abramov Clean Book Prize (2020), and the All-Russian Maslov Arctic Literature Prize (2022)) is a confession and declaration of love for the Russian North, Karelia, and Pomorye. The novel lacks a consistent chronology, but time itself breathes, its inseparable layers like the waters of the White Sea—silver-light, warmed by the ever-present sun, and scorchingly cold, dark, terrifying to touch. The sixteenth century, the twentieth century, and our time are intertwined here. The voices of several narrators, also heroes, merge: Saint Varlaam of Keretsk, Ivan Durov, compiler of the "Dictionary of the Living Pomor Language," Grigory, a children's hospital intensive care physician, and his Pomor grandfather, Fyodor. Memories, chance encounters, and miraculous coincidences connect them, like streams that connect separate rivers. And with thousands of other destinies, they will merge into a great sea, reflecting the heavenly light of Russia like a naked flame.
