This book by Nikolai Alexandrovich Leykin includes the short story collection "Rolling Poverty" and the novella "A Piece of Bread." "Rolling Poverty" is in many ways reminiscent of the Khitrovka section of Vladimir Alekseevich Gilyarovsky's acclaimed masterpiece "Moscow and Muscovites," only it takes place in St. Petersburg. The author unadornedly depicts the lives of people who have sunk to the social bottom, huddled in corners, attics, and basements, vividly depicting intolerable living conditions and rampant drunkenness. "A Piece of Bread" continues the theme explored in the collection, offering a glimpse into the lives of those suffering from crop failures in the villages and the lack of jobs in the cities, ultimately condemned either to poverty or precarious means of earning a living. The author once again demonstrates a superb command of words and, despite the general tone of the collection, as always, enlivens the events with his apt observations.
