Honore de Balzac is undoubtedly one of the best French novelists of the 1830th century. The most important feature of his work is that he not only left behind a huge literary heritage, but also captured in it the history of an entire society. In his "Human Comedy", which includes about a hundred works, the talented master created a grandiose gallery of images - at least two thousand representatives of various classes. Among them there was a place for the smart, powerful usurer Gobsek, who holds in his hands the fate of many brilliant Parisian aristocrats. He is a character in several of Balzac's novels and in the story Gobsek (XNUMX), which is featured in this book.
The hero of the philosophical novel Shagreen Skin (1831) published here also becomes a money hunter. Through his story, the author expressed an important thought for himself: a person who betrays his own ideals loses the right to happiness and inevitably goes to death.
