Mathieu loves his successful bookstore more than anything else in the world, where he spends his days and sometimes nights. He is becoming increasingly estranged from Tess, who in turn loves him more than anything else in the world. The action unfolds in a port city in Normandy, where the salty air of freedom permeates all the streets. Tess is waiting for a proposal from Mathieu, but, realizing that he is much more focused on himself, decides to leave. However, Mathieu's image does not let her go. To be free, Tess realizes, she must first free Mathieu herself.
