"A Hero of Our Time" (1840) is rightfully considered the first psychological novel in Russian literature. The narrative centers on the life story of the protagonist, Grigory Pechorin. The work consists of five parts, not arranged chronologically, but this has its own logic. The writer gradually begins to immerse the reader in the inner world of his hero, a cynic, a waster of life, a believer in nothing, contradictory and ambiguous. At the same time, "A Hero of Our Time" is also a philosophical work, posing crucial questions about the meaning of life and the role of fate; it is also a romance novel, captivating, exciting, and tragic. Written in the 19th century, "A Hero of Our Time" remains relevant, because every generation has its heroes, its Pechorins, its "superfluous people."
