This book includes works by the English poet Christopher Marlowe (1564–1593), a distinguished predecessor of Shakespeare. It includes the first complete Russian translation of the poem "Hero and Leander," begun by Marlowe but completed by the Elizabethan poet George Chapman based on the author's drafts; Marlowe's early play "The Tragedy of Dido, Queen of Carthage," which tells the tragic romance between Dido, the legendary founder and queen of Carthage, and Aeneas, the Trojan hero whose descendants founded Rome. The collection also includes Marlowe's remarkable pastoral song "The Passionate Shepherd to His Mistress." The originals of Marlowe's works are presented in modern English spelling. The book is intended for a wide range of readers.
