World War II was a time of mass airborne paratroops. Many countries experimented with parachute units, but the leader in this was Nazi Germany. In the few years leading up to the war, the Third Reich created numerous parachute airborne troops. It is generally believed that the impetus for the creation of German parachute units was the Kiev maneuvers of the Red Army in September 1935. At them foreign observers were first demonstrated the possibilities of mass action of parachute forces. But was it really so? In the spring of 1935, Germany began to form the "Hermann Goering" regiment, which became the first airborne unit. Within a few years, the German Army and Air Force broke free from the captivity of Versailles restrictions and began building modern combat units. In September 1938, the 7th Air Division was formed, and as early as April 1940, German parachutists made their debut in Denmark and Norway and became the talk of Europe. The first successes of the parachutists contributed to the growth of airborne units in Germany. Paratroopers played an important role in the fighting against Belgium, Greece and Yugoslavia. In the days of World War II, the Germans were unable to use lightning war tactics, and parachute units began to be used as infantry units, only occasionally involved in special airborne operations. German parachutists earned a high combat reputation with their opponents, who called them "green devils". The book tells about the history of German parachute units, methods of manning and training paratroopers, airborne tactics and combat application on various fronts of World War II.
