Paul Leverkühn, head of the Istanbul branch of the Abwehr, described in detail in his book what this organization was in essence, how it was organized and what functions it performed. Originally designed to combat the activities of foreign intelligence services, the Abwehr gradually expanded to establish intelligence departments outside Germany. Based on stories and memoirs of fellow soldiers, Leverkühn gave the most important and characteristic episodes of the Abwehr's work in Poland, the USSR, the Scandinavian states and the Middle East: espionage, sabotage, extraction of military and political information. The author did not ignore Admiral Canaris, under whose leadership the Abwehr became the General Intelligence Directorate of the Wehrmacht.
