Henry and Beezus, the second collection of short stories by American writer Beverly Cleary, was released in 1952 following the resounding success of her debut book, Henry Huggins. Over the next 50 years, Cleary wrote about 30 books, becoming, in the words of her young readers, "a real living classic."
The book has seven stories. In the first, Ribsey steals a piece of meat that the Huggins neighbour Mr Grumby brought into the barbecue garden. Only Scooth on his bike was able to catch up with the fugitive, and then Henry firmly decides to save for a bicycle. In the second story, Henry finds boxes of inflatable gum in the wasteland and realizes that this is a great chance to get rich. However, the gum trade at school, which at first goes very briskly, soon turns into a conversation with the headmaster and other troubles. In the third story, Henry is called upon to deliver newspapers in place of Scoot, who leaves for a three-day scout camp. But first he'll have to stop Ribsey from dragging papers! In the fourth story, Henry binds Ribsey to a parking lot, and the dog receives a ticket for improper parking. In the fifth story, Beezus bets on the wrong bike. In the sixth, Henry tries to turn a girl's bike into a boy's bike. In the seventh - together with Bizus, he goes to the opening of a department store, where he wins coupons to a beauty salon and tries dog food out of despair.
