How do we imagine Japanese women? A luxurious flower blooming on a tatami or a futon, an exquisite, delicate creature created only to bring joy to men, to serve them and to please the eye. According to ancient texts such as The Tale of Genji or The Diary of Izumi Shikibu, this is what they were like in the Heian period. But at the beginning of the 20th century, everything changed. It turns out that these flowers had sharp thorns hidden until then. The Japanese writer Tanizaki Seiji in his novel Geisha Eiko writes about a strong, passionate woman who does not recognize the slightest compromise in her love, and about men who are stuck up to their ears in everyday life, entangled in family squabbles, indecisive and cowardly. Tanizaki Seiji (1890–1971) was the younger brother of the famous Tanizaki Junichiro. He began his literary career under the influence of his famous brother and achieved great success as a writer. He wrote more than forty stories and short stories, and was also famous as an expert in English literature and as an excellent translator.
