This collection of works by renowned Siberian writer Alexei Vasilyevich Zverev (1913-1992) includes selected novellas and short stories. The novella "The Haruss Shawl" and the story "As on the Blue Sea..." are dedicated to Siberian folk life, both during and after the war, and to the difficult fate of the children of war. The story "Pantelei" captures the author's early teaching career in an illiterate and impoverished post-revolutionary village. In the story "Wounds," the war is presented to the reader as a great and difficult task, carried out day after day by Yevlampy Gnevyshev, a Russian peasant and soldier. This story, with its novel-like development of events and characters, along with "Convalescence" and "Respite," is considered the pinnacle of the writer's work. Not only Gnevyshev's fate is evident in his memoirs of the 1930s, but also the tragedy of the entire peasantry, uprooted from the land during the years of dispossession. In 2010, the Irkutsk Theatre of Folk Drama staged a dramatic performance, Gnevyshev, based on the story “Wounds”.
