The Hanseatic League, or Hanseatic League of merchants from the trading cities of northern Germany, was a unique phenomenon in European life from the 12th to 17th centuries. Hanseatic merchants supplied the West with Russian furs and wax, Polish wheat, and Hungarian and Swedish copper. To the East, they brought Flemish, Dutch, and English cloth, as well as French and Portuguese salt and wine. It was largely thanks to them that Scandinavia and Eastern Europe became acquainted with Western literature, Gothic architecture, and Renaissance painting. For 500 years, the Hanseatic League facilitated the establishment of economic, political, social, and cultural ties between Western and Eastern Europe.

Historian and professor Philipp Döllinger of the University of Strasbourg explores this in detail in his book, based on numerous original documents.
