18th century, northern Albion. A traveler lost in Scotland, like the knights-errant of old, decided to trust his horse's instincts. The horse found the right path in the twilight and, by a circuitous route, brought the rider to ancient ruins on a cliff. One of the locals warned the traveler that the ruins were haunted, but that there was no need to fear them. The traveler was undeterred and asked for a night's lodging in a nearby castle.

The latest volume in Walter Scott's "Masters of Adventure" series includes the mysterious "Guy Mannering, or the Astrologer," one of the first detective stories in the genre, which influenced the works of Edgar Allan Poe, Wilkie Collins, and Charles Dickens. Alexander Pushkin himself devoured this novel, enthusiastically calling Sir Walter "the Scottish sorcerer." This edition includes two hundred original illustrations from masters of old book graphics.
