For decades, the Soviet Union maintained a large "army" of military construction workers, outside the ranks and regulations of the Armed Forces. Organizationally, these workers were organized into military construction detachments—military, self-supporting organizations that carried out various tasks for the country's ministries and departments. For many years, the uniforms and insignia of these workers differed from those of the Soviet Army. Initially, starting in 1955, this was fundamentally different in cut and color. Then, as the status of these workers approached that of Soviet Army service members, their appearance became increasingly similar. Finally, the 1969 reform reduced the differences in their uniforms to a minimum—essentially, to different emblems.
This book examines the evolution of the uniforms of Soviet military construction workers. The book draws on a wealth of previously unpublished archival documents and historical photographs of military construction workers, as well as photographs of original uniforms and insignia, many of which are unique. The narrative logically complements a short section on the phaleristics of military construction units. The book's undoubted highlight is the modern reconstructions of military construction workers in their original uniforms.
This book will be useful to anyone interested in post-war Soviet military uniforms and the history of the legendary "construction battalion."
