In his first novel, Fiesta (And the Sun Rises), Hemingway illuminates the problems and pain of a lost generation, intertwining love and loss in the aftermath of World War I. The story centers on immigrants living in 1920s Paris: Jake Barnes, a veteran and journalist, and Brett Ashley, an English socialite. Together with the characters we travel from the raucous nightlife of Paris to the ruthless bullfighting arenas of Spain, immersing ourselves in an atmosphere of spiritual decay of society, moral bankruptcy and ghostly illusions.
"Spring Waters" is one of Hemingway's earliest novels. Spring is arriving in the small towns of Michigan and snow is still covering the ground when Scripps O'Neil sets out for Chicago, but on the way decides to stop briefly in Petoskey and meets Yogi Johnson. Quirky stories await them, the characters they meet are absurd yet familiar to each of us. This short, fast-paced novella parodies the style and mocks the images of characters from the novel "Grim Laughter" by American writer Sherwood Anderson.
