On December 2, 1956, a detachment of 82 rebels led by Fidel Castro landed from the yacht Granma near the village of Belik in the Los Colorados district of Oriente Province, Cuba. A two-year guerrilla war began. On January 1, 1959, rebel troops entered Santiago and Havana, and on January 8, Fidel Castro made a ceremonial arrival in the capital.

Nikolai Leonov: "Fidel Castro's rise to power was achieved by organizing a military expedition beyond Cuba's borders in Mexico, transferring this expedition to Cuban territory, and organizing a guerrilla revolutionary war in the Sierra Maestra mountains. Victory in this war and his rise to power through revolutionary means."

Retired Lieutenant General Nikolai Leonov of the Foreign Intelligence Service met Fidel Castro in 1955. In 1963, he served as his personal translator for six weeks when the Cuban leader visited the USSR.

The author is one of the leading experts on Cuba.
