In the life of Emily Wilson, once the most successful girl in New York, comes a dark streak. A creative crisis, cool relations with her family, and then her husband's infidelity force Emily to leave the metropolis and go to Bainbridge Island to her great-aunt Bea, to a house near where wild violets grow and the ocean foams right by the porch.
On the island, Emily meets the charismatic Jack, who tells her a funny story about how he wasn't allowed to get too close to her house as a child. But Bea doesn't seem too pleased with their acquaintance.... Emily gets no explanation from her, but soon finds the dated 1943 diary of one Esther Johnson, whose entries shed light on the strange behavior of the locals and change Emily's view of the island she has adored since childhood.
