The first volume of the trilogy, "Fernando Magellan," recounts the preparations and first months of the legendary circumnavigation expedition. The Portuguese navigator, finding no support in his homeland for his plan to find a strait from the Atlantic to the Pacific, departs for Spain, where King Charles V and merchants provide funds for the purchase and outfitting of ships and the hiring of a crew. Already en route to the shores of South America, a conspiracy against Magellan begins to brew among the Spanish nobles, led by Captain Cartagena. The mutiny began when the squadron, after several unsuccessful attempts to find the strait, was preparing to winter on the orders of the commander, two hundred miles short of its destination. Magellan suppressed the mutiny, preserving the ships and crew for the rest of the voyage.

The second volume of the trilogy, "Fernando Magellan," unfolds the tragic events that literally haunted the captain-admiral's squadron. First, one of the five ships sent on reconnaissance sank. Then, when, after wintering, the flotilla finally discovered the long-awaited strait, the accomplices of the rebel Cartagena staged another mutiny, seized the San Antonio, and took the ship, carrying its main supply of provisions, to Spain across the Atlantic. Magellan, who decided to continue the expedition, did not expect that the journey to the islands across the Pacific Ocean would take almost four months. When the flotilla approached the Philippines, 25 sailors died of starvation, scurvy, and other diseases. And in clashes with the natives who refused to submit to the Europeans, Magellan himself and another 30 of his officers and sailors perished.

The third book in the trilogy, "Fernando Magellan," recounts the fate of the remaining ships of the deceased captain-admiral's flotilla. The caravel Concepción, severely damaged, had to be burned. The Victoria and flagship Trinidad, which continued their voyage after long wanderings and brutal clashes with the natives, managed to reach the Spice Islands. Both caravels loaded with cinnamon and other valuable goods, but decided to return to Spain separately. The Trinidad returned to the Strait discovered by Magellan, while the Victoria set off across the Indian Ocean to circumnavigate Africa. The flagship failed to find the correct route, returned to the Maluku Islands, was captured by the Portuguese, and destroyed. Years later, only three members of the Trinidad's crew returned from captivity to their homeland. The Victoria, however, was luckier: the caravel, led by Captain Elcano, managed to evade the Portuguese and deliver 18 surviving sailors and cargo to Spain, which more than recouped the expedition's entire equipment costs. A total of 185 people perished on the first circumnavigation.
