What can the increasing importance of female images from the national past tell us about nineteenth-century European culture? In her book, Maria Chernysheva tentatively calls this trend the feminization of history and sees it as an important component of the process of bringing history closer to the private individual. By exploring the links between painting and graphics and the historical novel, drama and opera, as well as paying attention to ego-documents, the author shows how artists from the Russian Empire and especially the Kingdom of Poland contributed to this process. Poland's peripheral position in relation to the imperial center, coupled with its European past, provided a context in which new interpretations of female characters and new models of artistic representation of history were actively developed. Maria Chernysheva is an art historian and a specialist in Russian and French visual culture of the 19th century.
