This book analyzes the evolution of Roman methods of land combat from its origins—the Tsarist era and the early Republic—to the early 5th century AD, a time of decline in Roman military organization. Noting the changes that occurred in Roman tactics over this millennium, the author examines the causes that may have triggered them, the motivations that facilitated or, conversely, hindered the evolutionary process, and the results achieved at each individual stage. In an accessible and popular format, the book shows how the manipular legion emerged and why such a successful military formation proved unsuitable in new historical conditions; how and why the Romans returned to the concept of phalanx combat; and how the Roman phalanx of the Imperial era differed from the classical Greek or Macedonian phalanx. Understanding these stories will help the reader answer more general questions: were new methods of warfare (invented, imported, or adapted) invariably a response to new external threats, and were they always more effective than the old ones? What was the secret of the Roman army's success, and why did its fortunes decline in late antiquity?
