“Eugene Onegin” is the most famous and most significant work of A. S. Pushkin, the pinnacle of Russian poetry and the subject of numerous studies. Pushkin began the novel in May 1823, and finished only in the autumn of 1831, when it was written “Letter of Onegin to Tatiana”. In the autumn of 1823, the poet informed his friends: “I am no longer writing a novel, but a novel in verse – a diabolical difference...” Interesting, easy, based on a love story, transmitted in the manner of a confidential conversation between the author and the reader, and at the same time full of insoluble paradoxes and riddles, Pushkin’s novel attracts new and new generations of readers.
This edition includes a commentary on the novel by the famous philologist Yuri Mikhailovich Lotman. The scientist shows the internally complex, contradictory structure of the novel “Eugene Onegin”, hiding behind the external ease and comprehensibility of Pushkin’s lines.
