Zinovy Mikhailovich Kanevsky was and remains one of the most popular and well-known authors of works about high latitudes. A glaciologist who graduated from Moscow State University, he dreamed of spending his whole life in northern expeditions and was happy to get a job in the Arctic. However, in 1959, when the young scientist was only 27 years old, he got caught in a terrible blizzard on Novaya Zemlya during hydrological observations. It was impossible to walk in such a wind, and Kanevsky crawled... 20 hours! When the hurricane ended, the rescue team came across him not far from the shore. Due to frostbite, both arms below the elbows and his toes had to be amputated. A person who survived such a tragedy would have withdrawn into himself, putting an end to his dreams and plans. And certainly not in the Arctic. But Zinovy Kanevsky was not like that. He began to write about what he loved most - the poles of the earth.
