Auritro Majumder believes that contemporary world literature is shaped by peripheral internationalism. In the 20th century, outside the Western metropolises, fiction, nonfiction, film, and theater became instruments of resistance to cultural nationalism. Writers and intellectuals opposed not only the former imperialist West but also their own increasingly influential national elites. They marginalized the West, promoting colonial and postcolonial peripheries as the new center. The author traces the intellectual and literary connections between India, the Soviet Union, China, Vietnam, Latin America, and the United States.
