A series of picture books about the adventures of a good-natured bear named Ernest and his "adopted daughter," the little mouse Celestine, brought Belgian artist Gabrielle Vincent (1928–2000) worldwide fame.

Vincent's delicate watercolor drawings are so expressive that they almost require no words. Using light lines and barely noticeable strokes, she manages to convey the slightest nuances of emotion, the most subtle feelings of her characters—hurt, confusion, embarrassment, sudden delight, and, of course, love in all its forms. A love that is larger than life.

Gabrielle Vincent's legendary picture books inspired French writer Daniel Pennac to create a screenplay for an animated film, and later his own book, "The Story of Ernest and Celestine."

This collection includes five selected stories previously published by our house:
"Street Musicians,"
"Josephine's Room,"
"Ernest Fell Ill,"
"Christmas," and
"A Photograph to Remember."

Gabrielle Vincent's works are true masterpieces of book illustration, having become world classics. This long-awaited reprint of the Ernest and Celestine stories will be a wonderful gift for both children and adult connoisseurs.
